It is often stressed people should care more about others and/or their nation and less for their own pleasure. Such a selfless view makes it easy for dictators to order people about and go to war. If you believe people wanting to be happy is of little importance, how can you claim to care about their happiness? When people don't care about their own happiness they are reduced to humanless robots incapable of empathising with others. When we are happy it is much easier for us to be be calm and think rationally than when we are stressed and miserable. I am not arguing we should only care about our selves, it is in our human makeup to care about others and we generally feel better when those arround us are happy.
